ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Constance Walter, Communications Director at Sanford Lab

——————————————

Constance currently serves as the Communications Director for the Sanford Underground Research Facility, a world-leading physics laboratory, where she oversees media and acts as a community relations liaison, plans events, works on strategic marketing for SURF, Education and Outreach and the newly establish Foundation. She considers herself fortunate to work with a team of incredibly creative and dedicated people: engineers, educators, students and so many others.

Over her 30-year communications career, she has served as the entertainment magazine editor at the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska; the communications director for the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska; the assistant director of the Peru State College Foundation in Peru, Nebraska; and the director of University Relations at Dickinson State University. Before becoming the communications director at Sanford Lab, Constance operated her own consulting firm that worked with individuals and businesses, representing a regional entertainer, and producing local concerts.

At SURF, Constance will occasionally lead facility tours that include famous people. In 2015, for example, she met one of her childhood science heroes—Buzz Aldrin, who showed up unannounced for a tour of our underground facilities. “I like to say I have the best job in the world—and not only because of the Buzz Aldrin thing. It’s challenging, always exciting and I get to work with so many terrific people from all walks of life.”

Constance has a BA in English (with a minor in communication arts) and an MS in Organizational Management. She serves on the Black Hills Energy Citizen Advisory Council, the Davis-Bahcall Scholars Program committee and Sanford Underground Research Facility’s Cultural Advisory Committee.
