Jason Alley’s marketing and communications firm, Message tells stories unlike any other. Drawing inspiration from the most unlikely of places—a dusty vinyl, a country back road, or a flea market’s hidden gem—he set out to create an agency built on the notion that consumers are real people and at the end of the day, actions really do speak louder than words.

This raw authenticity has delivered a portfolio of products that stands without peer, even landing Alley a National Gold Advertising Award last year—the first South Dakotan to receive the honor. But it’s not just products that find a powerful voice under Alley’s direction—it’s the silenced, too. His design and management of the Lakota Voice Project empowers Native American at-risk youth to capture images of hope, helping to stem the tide of mounting suicide rates on reservations throughout the state.

And his community involvement doesn’t stop there. Alley’s immersed himself in service, on the AAF-Black Hills board and on committees throughout the region, including Special Olympics Black Hills, Club for Boys, Cornerstone Rescue Mission, YMCA Building Healthier Communities Initiative, and the South Dakota Wild Grasslands Coalition. Hailing from a small farm in southern Iowa, Alley went on to earn a BFA in graphic design with an emphasis in marketing from Simpson College, a private liberal arts school in Indianola, Iowa. After working for other design agencies across the Midwest, his entrepreneurial spark ignited and his own agency began to take shape.

Five years and countless accolades later, Message is thriving. And Alley’s just getting started. In and among the creative chaos, he’s collecting art, traversing the great outdoors, and exploring any place worth its salt—waiting for inspiration to strike with a pint-sized sidekick, his daughter Aubrie, by his side.
