Franzen tackles human trafficking, marketing on a shoestring budget Jan. 20

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Jan. 14, 2015) – Human trafficking activist Tess Franzen will speak at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Dahl Arts Center during the American Advertising Federation-Black Hills’ monthly luncheon.

In 2012 for many South Dakotans, human trafficking was a horror that happened elsewhere. In a mere two years Tess Franzen launched the issue onto the regional stage. She’s now been hired to take her work to the next level by F.R.E.E. International, based out of Las Vegas, to help end trafficking nationwide. Franzen share how to leverage your business or nonprofit through a little legwork and a lot of ingenuity to reach your audience on a shoestring budget, raise awareness about causes and meet people at their passion in order to make your mission their own.

Franzen serves as policy director and EMBRACE project coordinator for F.R.E.E. International, an organization that facilitates, leads and organizes a unique collaborative model designed to eradicate human trafficking and serve victims’ short- and long-term needs.

From April 2013 to Nov. 2014, Franzen worked as director of the Human Rights Division of the Family Heritage Alliance. Her work focused on combating human trafficking and issues related to human trafficking by writing articles, sharing information, networking with others and speaking on the subject. As a registered lobbyist with the Family Heritage Alliance, she championed bills designed to strengthen the state’s human trafficking laws.

Franzen is the founder and past chair of South Dakota’s West River Human Trafficking Task Force. She continues to serve as an active member of the task force and as chair of the task force’s Sturgis Rally team.

Tess received her bachelor’s in political science and history from Black Hills State University, where she graduated summa cum laude and first in her class. She also earned her master’s in strategic leadership from Black Hills State University.
