AAF-Black Hills Student Summit to host 50 young professionals from S.D., Neb. universities

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Nov. 12, 2014) –  Nearly 50 students from the University Center in Rapid City, Black Hills State University in Spearfish and Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., will gather for the second-annual American Advertising Federation-Black Hills (AAF-Black Hills) Student Summit from 9:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Dahl Arts Center.

The all-day summit will feature sessions led by local industry leaders including:

  • Michelle Kane, Black Hills PR: “An Insider’s Guide to PR”
  • Erin Zieske, Print Mark-et: “Working Seamlessly with Your Commercial Printer”
  • Hugh Weber, OTA: “Possibility on the Prairie”
  • Amanda Dokter, Ketel Thorstenson, and Patrick Morrison, Black Hills Corp.: “Interview Bootcamp”
  • Josh Barsch, StraightForward Interactive: “10 Résumé Tweaks That’ll Keep You From Moving in with Your Parents”

The summit will also feature a career expo, a Q&A panel and the opportunity to have students’ portfolio reviewed by graphic designers working in the Rapid City.

The evening will kick off with a dinner and social – and the opportunity for students to network with professionals attending the evening program – and end with a keynote at 5:45 p.m. by Kelly Lynch, film producer and founder of Lynchpin Creative. He will speak on the strategy of storytelling and selling yourself by finding your narrative and framing it for success.

“This immersive day-long summit offers student from across the region and Nebraska the unique opportunity to polish their portfolios, prep for interviews, network with area professionals and glean industry insight. Unlike many other conferences or career fairs, the Student Summit offers one-on-one interaction and feedback from people working in the field, while providing the added benefit of acting as a talent scout for local businesses – helping keep students in South Dakota after graduation,” said Dani Mason, president of AAF-Black Hills.

Sponsors are: Midcontinent Business Solutions, Jackalope, Neumiller Truck and Auto Body and Julius & Simpson Law Firm.
